This is out of order, but the Wednesday before my birthday I went to London. I had been planning on seeing a ballet, but my friend Cindy went with me and we decided to stop by the box office for the Lion King theatre. I'd been to the box office before, but was disappointed to discover that student tickets are only offered on the day of performance and only by asking at the box office. Since I almost never go to London without already having tickets to a performance, I assumed I'd never get to see Lion King. But when Cindy suggested checking the box office, I had to try, and when they offered us front row seats at student prices, I couldn't turn them down.
The show itself was a mix of amazing and disappointing. The first song brought tears to my eyes. The performers marched down the aisles to the stage and they were so close to me that I could have tripped them, if I'd wanted to get thrown out of the theatre. The costumes were marvelous, and the music and the singing were really good! The only thing that was disappointing was the children. I cry every time I watch the movie Lion King. The moment when Simba realizes his dad is dead brings me to tears every single time. And when Mufasa died I just wanted to giggle. The kid was like "dad, dad?" and then he pretty much shrugged and skipped off. I know he's a kid, but come on. Aren't there any kids who can sing AND act? I did hear that the kids performing in Matilda: the Musical are pretty good, so I'll get back to you.
Despite the lackluster performance by the child "stars" I enjoyed Lion King immensely. You just can't beat the front row! It's like the actors are singing right at you! Cindy swears one of the giraffes winked at us! I've been humming Lion King all week.
