And I thought meeting Sir Ian McKellen was the highlight of my year…

Then, tonight, I sat in the front row while Patrick Stewart played William Shakespeare, and afterwards I got his autograph!!!!!!! Wow, life is awesome!

Josephine arrived today. We’re spending spring break doing London and Paris, but I’m a bit worried, because while I’ve got good things planned for the next few days, I’m not sure anything’s going to top tonight. If I could pick one star in the world to see in a play, it would be him. Last summer I saw him in Merchant of Venice in Stratford-upon-Avon, but although I lurked for a while afterwards, I didn’t get to meet him. Tonight I was less than a yard from his face throughout the play, and then I got his autograph! So awesome!

We also met one of the other actors in the play. We were waiting in line at M&S in Waterloo station, trying to grab a snack before the show, and the cashier asked what we were doing that night. I mentioned that we were heading to the Young Vic to see Bingo, and the man at the next register perked up. He gave us directions to the theatre. I must admit, I was a bit concerned about talking to him, since he had quite a scruffy beard. Then he told us he was in the show. I was still a bit concerned that he might be a nutter, but he was in fact in the show, and he was hilarious. He did play a nutter, but that explains the beard, after all.

I’ve been trying to figure out what made this all so special, and Josephine just summed it up for me. She said, “I’ve seen him on Star Trek, and I thought he was amazing, but that’s TV, and you can fake a lot. This was theatre. You can’t fake this. He really is amazing!”

  1. so pretty much no one appreciates the magnitude of the experience, but the owner of my restaurant, also a Trekkie, was impressed.
