The Taming of the Shrew

Wednesday my friends Xinyi, Jasmine, and I went to Stratford-upon-Avon to see The Taming of the Shrew performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was awesome! We left Oxford early, so we had some time to walk around Stratford-upon-Avon and take pictures at the various Shakespeare statues and Shakespeare's birthplace.

The Royal Shakespeare Company did a wonderful job with Taming of the Shrew. I think the play as a whole is hilarious, but it can be played in a very sexist way, especially the ending where Katerina is "tamed". But on the whole, I think the RSC did a very good job. Katerina at the beginning of the play was a crazy wildcat. She hit people, screamed, and generally caused mayhem. So when Petruchio started acting up, he was really just giving her a taste of her own medicine. I'd like to believe that she saw how much of a pain she was being, and decided to be a nicer person, not because a man told her to be, but because she finally realized how annoying she had been. Also, who wouldn't fall for Petruchio? He was tall, attractive, really funny, and willing to put up with her craziness.

The play was so good, I think I'm going to see it again!
