If I could write poetry, I would write about a summer night at La Guinguette in Tours, France.
A guinguette is a kind of an outdoor french bar. According to Wikipedia, guinguettes were started to skirt liquor laws. They were in the suburbs, often on the banks of rivers, and they usually consisted of a bar with a place for dancing. Today, they have mostly gone out of style, but a few remain. The guinguette in Tours (a city in central France) is absolutely wonderful. It is a bar selling wine by the glass or by the bottle right on the banks of the Loire.
The night I was there, the weather was beautiful. It was a warm night in August with a cool breeze blowing off the river. Music was playing, and French people were dancing, with that elegant effortless grace that only the French have. I am not a talented dancer, so I sat with my friends, drank wine, and enjoyed the night. The lights of the guinguette sparkled on the Loire river. I was so happy to be in France, to be starting a whole semester abroad. It was utterly magical.
For some reason I cannot remember now, I didn't take any pictures of the night. Luckily, I found this one on my friend's facebook:
The banks of the Loire in Tours are very pretty during the day, as well.
If you are ever in Tours on a summer's night, look for the guinguette. It's on the bank of the Seine right near the main bridge in Tours, the Pont Wilson. If (unfortunately) you can't find it or it is closed, you can always go to Place Plumereau.
