Windsor Castle and Salisbury Cathedral

I was soaked!
Saturday was a disaster. We were scheduled to go on a mandatory trip to Windsor Castle. I’ve seen it twice before, and so I wasn’t particularly excited to see it again. Nevertheless, I chose not to feign illness and skip the trip. That was a mistake. The rain was unrelenting and penetrating. My water-resistant jacket was soaked, my shoes and socks were squelching with every step, and I was miserable. After four late nights, I was not in the mood to appreciate anything. Against my better judgment, I chose to enter the castle, which only succeeded in drenching any previously dry parts of me. I finally gave up and decided to take a train to London or back to Oxford. Luckily I ran into some other discouraged members of my class, and we spent a lovely afternoon eating good tapas and cheesecake for dessert!

Sunday started much better, since it wasn’t raining more than a little drizzle. This is really the best you can hope for here in England, but I’ll take it. Nicci had organized a trip to Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and Avebury. I’d seen Stonehenge before, but I decided to go anyway, and it was a lot of fun!

Salisbury cathedral was a surprise. I thought I’d been there before, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I hadn’t (or I’d completely forgotten how pretty it is). The cloisters were especially picturesque.

The church is brighter than most because most of the stained glass has been replaced with clear glass, letting in a lot more light.

The modern stained glass

Is this an ancient typo?

My best Nun imitation.
