Wednesday morning Kelsey and I got up at an ungodly hour. We exited the hostel quietly, and without turning on the overhead light, because we are polite, unlike some American tourists. We took the metro to Gare du Nord and caught the Eurostar to London. We both wanted to see some of the countryside from the train, but we fell asleep about 15 minutes in and woke up in St. Pancras station. I’m sure the views were beautiful, though.
In London, we took the tube from St. Pancras to Victoria Station, and paid to leave our luggage for the day. We were on our way to the Tate Britain when we walked past the Apollo Victoria Theatre. They were showing a Matinee of Wicked, and we got 6th row seats at a discount price because we’re students! It was amazing! We’ve both seen Wicked before, but it was just so much more powerful on the London Stage. The British accents made the show so much cooler, the costumes were beautiful, the voices were amazing! It was so cool! And had we simply walked down another street, or come on a different day, we would have completely missed out on such an amazing experience. I feel very lucky.
We did a quick walk around Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, and then we went to the Yotel for the night. The Yotel is really cool! It’s a very small hotel room inside Gatwick Airport. Everything feels like it’s on a ship: the table folds down, the bunkbeds fold out of the wall, the flatscreen tv is set into the wall.
While it was a short day in London, it really made us feel how lucky we are. We woke up in Paris, slept in London, and flew to Shannon the next day. We walked past Buckingham Palace in search of a park bench to eat our picnic on. It’s crazy to think that we could just walk past something like that. And we passed businessmen who walk past it every day. Can you imagine living in London and walking past Buckingham palace or Westminster Abbey every day?
