We had hoped to spend a day in Brussels and a day in Bruges, but there was a gas leak on the tracks near Rotterdam, and I didn't get into Brussels until around 6pm. Since my blog is days behind already, I'm just going to skip Saturday, and save you all the tale of frustration associated with delayed trains.
On Sunday we took the train from Brussels to Bruges. I knew little about Bruges, but it looked really cute on the Rick Steves travel video I watched, so I've been planning on going there all semester. I'm glad I did.
When we arrived there were dark clouds on the horizon, and we were rained on for the entire hour we spent in line to walk up the steps to the bell tower in the Markt. There are more steps than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but while I used to consider the Arc de Triomphe my own personal hell, I've actually enjoyed it the last few times. The bell tower has lots of landings, so I took a lot of rests, and it was all right. I'm sure my legs will hurt tomorrow, but it was good to be tired from actually doing something, after I spent so much of yesterday waiting for things.
